Jamie: Roseway, Washington
Jamie sat patiently in a leather chair outside the principalâs office, waiting to be called inside. All around her were desks of the other office workers, who sat around and were either on computers or reading books and waiting for the next call. As she sat there, she thought about why she was summoned. After all, she only failed one quiz, and that hardly seemed like a reason to be called to the principalâs office. She hadnât done anything else wrong, and she started fearing that someone framed her for something. But who here would want to frame me?
A few minutes had passed before she was motioned into the principalâs office, and she wasted no time heading inside. She took a seat in one of the chairs that faced who she presumed was the principal. âWhatever Iâm in for, I swear I didnâtââ
âJamie,â the principal started to say, âI didnât call you in here because you are in trouble but rather to ask you some questions.â
Jamie began to relax in her seat. âAbout what?â
âHow is it living with the Jensens?â asked the principal as he pushed a picture of a brown-haired, yellow-eyed man towards her. âHave they taught you about this man?â
Jamie squinted her eyes at the picture. âNo. Who is he?â
âHe is none other than the Master, the one who perfected our society and ridded it of normal human foibles. Iâm sure youâve heard of Him,â he continued.
âYes, I have.â
The principal leaned forward in his seat. âHow would you feel about moving into the tourist building so we can prepare you for your integration on Sunday?â
âWhat? Iâm being integrated?â
The principal nodded slowly. âYou see, you are a visitor to our town. Not a resident. Therefore, your integration needs to happen soon. Would you be willing to do that?â
âWhat? No!â Jamie bellowed, attempting to leave her seat.
Behind her, the door flew open and then slammed shut, and she turned to see who had entered. What stood between her and the only possible exit was a burly, brown-haired, and brown-eyed man.
âI suggest you sit down,â said the principal. âHave you met Niko?â
âIs this the tourist I was ordered to escort back to the tourist building?â the man who was introduced to Jamie as Niko asked.
âYes,â said the principal. âHowever, sheâs resisting.â
âI donât want to go,â Jamie protested. âI like living with Rebekah.â
âJamie, I am willing to give you the rest of the week off from school if you cooperate,â said the principal. âAre you willing to go now?â
Jamie felt Niko place his hands on her shoulders. Feebly, she tried shrugging them off, but to no avail. âNo, you canât force me to leave Rebekah.â
âUnfortunately, you donât have a choice,â said the principal before addressing Niko. âDo what you must to make her go.â
Nikoâs grip tightened on her shoulders as he yanked her out of her seat.
âWhat do you plan to do with me?â Jamie shouted at Niko as she started to struggle. Instead of leading her out of the office, he placed her in front of a wall and put a hand on her back.
